Making Cups and Cones

Now that you have mastered the art of making Shakes and Blasts, you’re ready for the fine art of dispensing soft serve ice cream to make the perfect cup or cone.  Like any craft, it will require:

  • a dash of natural talent
  • a good amount of hand-eye coordination
  • practice to get your hands doing what you want them to do

There are two videos in this section:

  • Making Cups
  • Making Cones

Both use the same machine and the same layering techniques.  The simple difference is the container – In the first video, you’ll see how to fill the cup.  In the second, how to layer the ice cream onto the cone.

Tour of the Machine

You’ll be given a brief tour of soft serve dispensing machine.   You’ll learn about what it does and the two parts, handle and spigot, that you’ll be using during  the dispensing process.

Safety Concerns

Fortunately, there are no safety hazards or concerns with the soft serve dispenser.

Tags and Job Aids – Key Steps in the Process

In these videos, we’ll use the Training Tags and Job Aids that identify the key steps in the process of making the cone.  Listen for them and watch for them on the machine as you watch the video.

Here are the Tags and the key steps for creating the cone:

  • “Cup Up not Down”
  • “Start at the Back”
  • “Round and Around”
  • “Count Your Layers”
  • “Center It”
  • “Stop It and Then Drop” Gradually stretching the ribbon as you lower the cup.
  • “Weigh It and Say It”
  • “Hand It, Don’t Land It”

Making Cups

The first video is the shorter of the two.  It focuses in on the dispensing process in the context of the cup.

With that overview, here’s the video.  Enjoy.

Making Soft Serve Cones

The second video will take you on a tour of the:

  • soft serve dispensing machine
  • cone construction and features
  • cone and buddy jacket racks including the baby cones
  • hand it, don’t land it perfect delivery exception

The challenge is in mastering the layering technique.  It’s all in the hand and arm movement.  You can do this.
